Stairs ARE Art
Stairs should always be thought of as a an object...a sculptural object that is. As far as design goes your options are endless, well after you consider code and budget you may be a few less:-) Be sure to keep thinking out of the box and if you're at a loss check out all this wonderful Stair Porn.
